Just a little TV Heads Up: Gold medalists Meryl Davis and Charlie White will be ice skating again in The Figure Skating Gala in Sochi where all the medalists will perform. The Gala will take place on Saturday, February 23rd at 12:30 PM ET on NBC Sports Network!! They may show highlights on your NBC local TV station in the primetime broadcast. So, be sure to watch. Thanks to Linz for the heads up!
Also, if interested in knowing more on Meryl and Charlie’s costumes and how former Dancing With The Stars designer, Randall Christensen, was inspired in making them, be sure to read this exclusive interview at PureDWTS. Below is a take on their “My Fair Lady” costume for which Derek choreographed and a sketch of the design….
Can you tell us about how and when this union came to be? What was the designing process like and working with Meryl and Charlie for the Olympics? Was Derek Hough involved in any way with the costume process since he choreographed their Short dance?
MY COMPANY HAS BEEN WORKING WITH MERYL AND CHARLIE FOR SEVERAL YEARS, WHILE I WAS STILL WORKING ON DWTS. THEY APPROACHED US IN 2009/2010 TO MAKE COSTUMES FOR THEM. WHEN I ENDED MY RUN ON DWTS THEY WERE ALREADY ESTABLISHED CLIENTS.
MERYL’S MOTHER CHERYL HAS BEEN A GODSEND AND SUCH A HELP WITH THE DESIGNING PROCESS. SHE (& THEY) SEND US PHOTOS, MAGAZINE PICS AND/OR VIDEOS TO HELP US GET IDEAS OF THINGS THEY’RE CONSIDERING FOR A COSTUME. FOR THIS COMPETITION SEASON WE HAVE ACTUALLY CREATED 3 DIFFERENT PINK COSTUMES FOR MERYL. SHE WORE THE FIRST ONE IN BOSTON, A VERY SIMPLE, CLASSIC COSTUME – SLEEVELESS, WITH LOTS OF CRYSTAL JEWELS ALONG THE NECKLINE AND WAISTLINE. WE CREATED A SECOND (STILL NOT SEEN) PINK COSTUME BASED OFF OF A MAGAZINE “TEAR SHEET” PHOTO. IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL COSTUME JUST ENCRUSTED WITH THOUSANDS OF VARIOUS SIZES AND SHADES OF PINK RHINESTONES.
THE THIRD PINK COSTUME (AND THE ONE THAT SHE ENDED UP WEARING FOR THE SHORT PROGRAM IN THE OLYMPICS) DEFINITELY HAD A VINTAGE FEEL TO IT, WHICH WAS INTENTIONAL. THEY WERE DANCING TO “I COULD HAVE DANCED ALL NIGHT” FROM “MY FAIR LADY.” I THOUGHT THAT THE COSTUME EMBODIED THE LOOK OF THAT ERA, THE FEELING OF YOUTH AND INNOCENCE THAT THE CHARACTER (IN THE MOVIE) FELT, AS WELL AS THE FEELING OF HOPE AND OPPORTUNITY THAT SHE WAS EXPERIENCING, FEELING BEAUTIFUL FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME. ALL OF THESE EMOTIONS ALSO WERE MIRRORED IN MERYL! I FELT IT WAS A PERFECT BLENDING OF CHARACTER, EMOTIONS AND EMBODIED HOW MERYL WAS FEELING. HER MOTHER SENT A VIDEO CLIP OF AN OLD MOVIE THAT HAD A SIMILAR IDEA. FOR ABOUT A WEEK I STRUGGLED WITH TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE THE COSTUME WORK, AND STILL BE YOUTHFUL AND DREAMY. AFTER SEVERAL (FAILED) ATTEMPTS, I STRUCK GOLD (no pun intended) WITH THE CONCEPT THAT WE WENT WITH. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE PINK APPLIQUE WORK THAT WE DID, SCULPTING AND SHAPING AREAS OF MERYL’S BODY, AND THE JEWEL/STONE WORK WAS PHENOMENAL! AFTER WE SENT THE COSTUME FOR A FITTING, MERYL ASKED IF WE COULD TAKE OUT ONE OF THE (3) LAYERS OF SILK CHIFFON IN THE SKIRT AND ADD A DARKER PINK, SO THAT THEIR FINAL LIFT WOULD SHOW THE CONTRASTING UNDERSKIRT. AS FATE WOULD HAVE IT, I WAS IN DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES FABRIC SHOPPING WHEN MY ASSISTANT IN PHOENIX CALLED AND TOLD ME, SO I WAS ABLE TO GET THE CONTRAST COLOR SILK RIGHT THEN. AND I MUST SAY, THE CONTRASTING UNDERSKIRT DEFINITELY MADE SUCH AN IMPACT!
Lots more at PureDWTS. Sigh, I don’t think I will ever forget this Olympics. Derek and Randall’s involvement made it that more special, didn’t it?! ~Vogue
The Ice Network has posted a conference call with Meryl Davis and Charlie White. You can listen for how they felt about their routines before winning a gold medal. They also talk of Derek and working with him at the 10:50 minute mark. They also said they’d do Dancing With The Stars if they were ever asked. Fun interview! Thanks to Elmari for sending!! ~Vogue
ETA: People.com also has a mention on Derek and Dancing With The Stars at this link.
The title says it all!! Ice dancers MERYL DAVIS AND CHARLIE WHITE have just won a GOLD metal in the 2014 Sochi Olympics! And to think….Dancing With The Stars and Emmy winning DEREK HOUGH helped them to do it by choreographing their Short program. Not only that, they broke a record for highest score ever in Ice Dancing with it! Today Meryl and Charlie’s Free skate today was simply exquisite, passionate, and beautiful as well! Note too that this is the first time in Olympic history an American couple has ever won a Gold Medal for Ice Dancing! They did it, Everyone!!! What a moment!!!
GOOD JOB DEREK! You can add this endeavor with Meryl and Charlie and your talent to choreograph to your many set of accomplishments!!
Five-time Dancing with the Stars champion Derek Hough, who helped choreograph the pair’s My Fair Lady-themed short program for Sochi, got the golden news on his cell phone while stuck in an airport on a bad-weather layover.
“I’ve been rooting for them the whole time. It’s just unbelievable. I’m so happy for them. It couldn’t have happened to two nicer people,” he tells PEOPLE.
Derek is mentioned in a new Meryl Davis and Charlie White interview with People.com. The two talk of their Mom’s and how they are their good luck charms, but, they are also feeling the love of their famous friends one of which is Derek. Read on….
The two have at least one celebrity fan; Dancing with the Stars’s Derek Hough actually helped choreograph Davis and White’s My Fair Lady-inspired routine, doing a “boot camp” with the pair last spring.
“What was so special abut working with Derek was how he was able to express to us what we needed to do, but also visualize and recognize the way we’d use his moves on the ice, as well. He was really quite genius,” White says. Adds Davis, “He’s just fantastic. He has an infectious, positive energy.”
THAT he does! More at People.com. Don’t forget to watch Meryl and Charlie’s Free skate today on NBC Sports Network and/or tonight on NBC primetime and keep your fingers crossed that they win a GOLD metal. ~Vogue
TV Guide is featuring a new interview with Derek! They ask him about choreographing for Meryl and Charlie. Also, check out how they ask him if he’s doing Dancing With The Stars this season…..
Have you been keeping up with their contests this season?
Hough: Yeah, I’ve been watching videos. They’ve been killing it. … To watch them get the highest score in history at the U.S. Nationals last month was so cool. I’m just really excited to see them at the Olympics. I’m not going, but I’ll definitely be watching it at home and freaking out. I’ll be losing my mind. They’re so great and inspiring. They’ve been working so hard. Four years ago, they took silver, and it lit a fire in them. They said, “We want to go all the way.” They went after it and they’re the best in the world right now. It was an absolute pleasure from start to finish working with them and to be part of their journey.
You teased last year that you might incorporate something you learned from them into the show. Have you?
Hough: Yeah. I did it with Kellie [Pickler] in our freestyle. What happens when you’re doing something like this is it makes you go, “What if we try this?” [In the freestyle] where she puts her feet on my shoulders and I start spinning her around, it’s something you might see in ice dancing. I wasn’t taught that, but maybe because I was working with them, I thought that was something we could put in.
That raises the question: Will you incorporate something again? Have you decided if you’re coming back next season?
Hough: I haven’t decided yet. We’re still working things out right now. We’ll see. It’s just making sure everything’s in order. I’m working on a book that’s coming out in May called Taking the Lead and I have some other projects going on.
What if either Meryl or Charlie — or both — come on? They could withdraw from worlds next month and you guys always poach an Olympian after each Games.
Hough: [Laughs] That’s true! If they ever do the show, that’d be awesome. I think they might want to defend their title.

Hey All! How are you? Just a quick update on Olympic coverage with Meryl Davis and Charlie White. As you know from previous postings, Meryl and Charlie will perform their Short Program that Derek helped to choreograph on Feb. 16th in Sochi, Russia!! If you want to watch the complete event go down (LIVE?), we believe you might need NBC Sports Network to watch it. Ice Dancing will begin at 10:00AM ET according to NBC Olympics. Meryl and Charlie will then dance their Free dance the next day on February 17th at 10:00AM ET. Though if TV coverage of the Olympics works like in the past, the regular NBC channel will cover the highlights and skating events at night on Primetime. This link has been updating making it hard to work at times, but, it may have more times and listings soon as well as your local TV Guides. We also think Meryl and Charlie might be dancing in a Team event which is taking place on February 8th (??), but, we’re unsure. Special thanks to Linz for all of her work trying to figure out the times of these events. Hopefully, we will know a little more soon! Whatever the case, be sure to mark your calendars for Feb. 16th and 17th!!
