This is a site for fans of Derek Hough. We try our best to compile all news, pictures, music and videos about and by Derek – if you find something you think we’ve missed, feel free to contact us. If you are a new fan of Derek’s and want to learn more about him, the “Accomplishments” and “Biography” buttons to the left contain pages of what we know (or think we know). ;-)
Also to the left is a music section where you can find music by Ballas Hough, Derek’s band, and songs that Derek has danced to on Dancing with the Stars. Complete with iTunes links.
If you want to see old posts, there are two ways: 1) by the media buttons to the left, or; 2) by month under the “Derek Archives” buttons also on the left-hand side of this page.

Why do you think Jennifer is doing so well? You’ve been on top the leader board for the first two weeks and tied for second in Week 3.
She’s not a trained dancer by any means, but she definitely has dancing in her body and she’s in great shape, which helps. She’s physically fit, willing to learn, and has a great head on her shoulders, so it makes it easier for me to teach her. You can do a lot with that. Hopefully we can maintain that.
What’s the hardest part of working with Jennifer?
Honestly, I keep forgetting she’s 50. So when I start choreographing and throwing her around and I’m doing this and I’m like, ‘Wow. She looks really exhausted. Oh, yeah. Oh shoot, she’s 50! Crap. I gotta slow down a little bit.’
How do Jennifer Grey and Nicole Scherzinger differ?
With Nicole, if I made her mad, she would dance great. With Jennifer, if I make her mad or upset, she shuts down completely. I have to constantly adapt how I am with my partners. One thing I love about Jennifer is she’s here to dance and to learn how to dance. She’s really here for the process and I feel that, I love that.
And the most intriguing part:
What’s up with the Ballas Hough band?
Right now Mark Ballas has an album coming out. I have some other things I’m doing – not music-related – but I can’t really talk about it yet.
I think a lot of you know this already, but the Ballas Hough Band’s song “Together Faraway” was used in The Vampire Diaries tv show this week. It was the episode 204, titled “Memory Lane”.
The complete song list for the episode can be found at Vampire-Diaries.net. That’s pretty cool – now if we could just get Derek to work on some solo music. In addition to a movie or his own TV show. What? I don’t ask for much! Heh.
I guess I’ve gotten very used to the short hair, because Derek looks a bit strange in this picture now.
I do believe that this is part opinion and part knowledge, mainly about Hollywood Records and how they operate. Record labels are a dirty business – I’ve known that for a while (I live in Nashville, duh ), but it’s interesting to read someone who has spent some time analyzing this particular record label. You might want to read the whole article to get a feel for what he’s talking about. From Teen Entertainment:
Ballas Hough Band originally started in the UK as Almost Amy. Hollywood Records signed them when they moved over to LA and they put out a debut album almost a year ago. Last November, they performed a new single “Move” at Dancing With the Stars (shocker…considering two of their biggest people are in the group). There they stated that they were working on a new CD. Next thing you know, Hollywood Records dropped them because their songs weren’t getting any air play on the radio. Please tell me ANY other Hollywood Records artist that has gotten MAJOR air play? Miley with “The Climb” and some with “Party in the USA” and now Selena with “Naturally”. I can’t think of others…can you? So why were they dropped? I have found that Hollywood Records is very smart with having someone in almost every music genre. When Raven was done, Jordan Pruitt sort of filled her spot. Ballas Hough is gone and now they have…Allstar Weekend? Allstar Weekend isn’t even that good. Ballas Hough was pretty good and they were unique too. Kind of a classy 3OH!3 with some Metro Station mixed together.
The combination of being crazy busy at work (being a grown up with a real job, like, totally sucks – I worked today and yesterday even) and really only paying attention to Derek (like you all hadn’t noticed ) leads me to being a little behind in some news courtesy of Sam Marder. Sam is officially my second favorite member of BHB for whom I could be tempted to throw Derek over because he’s just the cutest thing EVER (I’m really NOT 12…or even 20….it’s just fun to pretend once in a while). And I’m not just saying that because he tweeted that he reads this page – he did that well after I declared my affection for him. ::::waves to Sam:::: Anyway, because SO many of you have been asking me about BHB and because I was officially clueless up until reading Sam’s recent blog, I figured I would tell you that, according to Sam, BHB is officially done. We had kinda figured that, but didn’t know for sure. As for what Mark and Derek are doing – well, that seems somewhat clear, to a point, but it doesn’t appear that even Sam knows how it’s going to end up. Click to go to Sam’s MySpace and read his blog for yourself and give him a little love. Or a lot of love. And listen to his music. Love ya, Sam. I hope Derek and Harry didn’t get you into any trouble in London last night.
Great interview with Derek by TV Guide - poor guy was worried about the Mambo move. I say, do what ya gotta do to stand out in a crowd!! Here are some excerpts, click the link to read the whole thing:
TVGuide.com: We have to first talk about the mambo marathon and that head-bobbing move you guys did.
Derek Hough: [Laughs] Everybody’s like, “What the heck is that? It’s so sexual!” Well, I didn’t mean for it to look that way! There’s a move in the mambo where she hinges back and you go down, flip your leg over and bring her back up. But as I was looking around, I was like, “Oh, we can’t just do our routine. We’ve got to do something different, something that kind of eggs the audience on a little bit.” So I did that move and just kind of kept her down there and she kept trying to come back up and I was like, “Nope!” It was pretty funny. She did an amazing job.
TVGuide.com: How much of those four minutes was improvised and how much was choreographed?
Hough: I did a minute-long routine and then we just repeated it. When it was getting closer [to the end], we knew we really had to up our game, so I just started doing the most exciting parts. It was a total freestyle. She just starting grooving out and I was like, “OK, I’ll groove out with you.” So I grabbed her and started shouting out stuff: “OK, here comes the pretzel! Here comes the dip!” It was all out of order, but she was wanting it and just did a great job.
TVGuide.com: Do you feel like a lot of people have a different opinion of her now than they did when she was on Superstars?
Hough: Yeah. When we’re in the studio, people go, “Give it up for Donny!” and the crowd goes crazy. “Give it up for Kelly!” and the crowd goes nuts. “Give it up for Joanna!” and everyone’s like, [muted] “Yay.” Her fan base is not as big as Donny Osmond’s or anyone like that and she knows that. But during the mambo marathon, when we were left dancing, the audience went insane — totally rooting for her. They were 100 percent on her side. She told me later, “Oh my gosh, I’ve never had so much support in my entire life.” It was so, so nice to hear that. She’s definitely earned her place on the show. I’m really proud of her.
TVGuide.com: You’re pulling double duty this week too: You and Mark [Ballas, with whom he formed the Ballas Hough Band] are performing a song, “Move,” on the results show. What can we expect?
Hough: It’s going to be a duo thing. It’s going to be a full-on performance with dancers and stuff like that. We’ve been rehearsing and choreographing it. The performance is going to be available on iTunes. It’s going to be a little different from what people have heard from us before. It’s going to be more like something you would hear in a club, something that you would say, “Oh, I want to choreograph to that” when you hear it. We wanted to show a dance club vibe. It’s going to be a very three-dimensional show. We’re really excited.
According to Derek’s twitter, he and Mark are performing on the next results show!! Yay!! They will be performing their “next single” Move. To make it easier for people to buy, we’ll be putting an iTunes link on the site as soon as it is available.
Mark Ballas and Derek Hough, friends who became household names as dance superstars on the ABC hit “Dancing with the Stars,” will unveil their new song “Move” from their upcoming album on the Nov. 3 episode of the show. Immediately after the broadcast, the song will be available for download on iTunes.
A sexy, hard-driving club track “Move” reveals the evolving musical direction of Ballas Hough. Though steeped in rock and pop music all their lives, the two have taken their sound and infused it with a more rhythmic club groove, as the new song shows. Singing about a chance romantic encounter out on the dance floor, Mark and Derek trade vocals over the song’s hypnotic melody and insistent beat.
“We have taken a different approach to our new music,” says Derek. “The song ‘Move’ really signifies a side to us that has not yet been seen in our music, a more mature and club-like sound that will encourage people to get up and dance! Debuting our single on DWTS is great because it’s like home for us, and what better place to debut our single than in such a comfortable environment.”
In other news….
Joanna’s latest blog is up at Maxim Magazine. Here are a couple excerpts:
I am so excited about this week! Derek and I did the waltz and got first place. I was very surprised, but it was a great feeling. It was so wonderful to get positive feedback from Bruno when he told me I danced like a butterfly. Now I want to work even harder for next week.
I had a blast dancing in the mambo competition! Derek and I let our choreography go halfway through and just did our own thing. It’s so much less nerve-racking when everyone’s dancing at the same time. When Maya was tapped out of the dance-off the crowd cheered for us, which is so encouraging because she has a much bigger fan base. Winning the mambo and having the support of the crowd was one of the best moments of the show so far!
Click the link to read about “cranky” Derek. The pictures from the blog are included below.
Aaaaannnnddddd…..I found another picture from after Kelly Osbourne’s birthday party. Of course, it has to be accompanied by speculation about Derek and Joanna’s relationship. Hee. Yeah, not going to include a link to the site.
Here’s a cute video from Extra that I never got around to last night!
From AOL Television - I love hearing Derek talk about that Team Mambo deal. He really enjoyed himself!!
Derek and Joanna, how’d it feel winning the group mambo competition?
Derek: It was utterly liberating. It was a huge highlight.
Joanna: It felt great because we were all on the floor at the same time. We had a blast. We had a great night.
Derek: A memorable night.
Who did you think was going to win the mambo?
Derek: We definitely had our picks of who’d last. We just hoped we’d make it to where we could move around on the floor. Joanna started shaking. She was there in the moment and I was there with her. It was so much fun.
Joanna: We thought Mya and Dmitry, of course, would make it to the end.
How long do you think you could have kept going?
Derek: I was about to die. But when you have an audience that’s rooting for you, it keeps you going. I got my third wind. It was a blast. Joanna was rocking it. She got in the groove and I think that’s what the judges saw.
Joanna: Not much longer! My thighs were killing me. I was like, “Can you please let me up now?”
Also, in that same article….veeerrrrryyyy interesting. Can’t wait to see if it comes true:
What are your plans for the future?
Melissa: I’m going home [to Connecticut]. I’ll come back and do the finale. I have a pilot that I’m doing for ABC Family in December. I play a bad girl politician, who has to raise her sister’s children. I hire Joey Lawrence to be my “manny.” It’s a sitcom.
Mark: I’ll be here for results shows, I think. We [the Ballas/Hough band] have a new single coming out in the next couple of weeks. Stay tuned for the November 3 results show.
Will you be singing on that show?
Mark: [Smiles] Maybe … yeah, we’ll be here.
Entertainment Tonight – Derek and Joanna are still stoked about the Mambo competition.
Brief shot of Derek at Kelly’s B-day party, followed by Julianne and Marabeth giving a shout out to Derek/Joanna – Derek and Jo are scattered all through this video!
As previously mentioned, E!’s Marc Malkin spoke to Derek – here’s an excerpt:
Hough says his celeb partner, Polish-born model Joanna Krupa, is concerned folks have the wrong impression of her because of the not-so-nice run-ins she had with football star Terrell Owens on the reality show The Superstars.
“She’s all worried that people are going to think she’s a big bitch,” Hough said. “But for me, she’s not at all. She’s very very sweet.”
Their first dance will be a salsa. “The models always kind of have that stiff thing going on and not being able to loosen up,” Hough said. “But she’s working it out and doing good.”
Hough will also make his singing debut on DWTS with best friend and fellow hoofer Mark Ballas. “It’s got an urban vibe to it,” Hough said of their sound, “but it’s dance. It’s stuff you hear at the clubs.”
Hough admits season nine won’t be the same without his sister Julianne Hough, who has taken time off from the dancefloor to concentrate on her acting and country music careers. “It is a little weird. I’m not going to lie,” he said. “But she’s still in L.A. and we’re still going to kick it and stuff. Now that I’m single and she’s good at the whole dating thing, she’s going to help me out.”
But then he quickly added, “I’m not really worried about that. I’m not really looking to get in a relationship right now.”
I’m putting this out in the Universe – Derek has the makings of a movie star.
We know he can sing…
And play all manner of instruments…
We know he can dance like nobody’s business… (He’s nominated for an Emmy…he’s that good.)
We know he has combined singing, dancing AND acting on STAGE…
He’s got movie star good looks…
And a body to die for…
Basically, there is no reason he can’t be a movie star. Mark wants to be John Mayer….I think Derek could be Leonardo Dicaprio. Or Brad Pitt. A Brad Pitt that can sing AND dance! All at the same time (Kudos to whoever catches that reference).
Why yes, this is how I fill my time when nothing is going on.
The Des Moines Register has a nice write up on the show tonight. Wish I woulda been there. Here’s the bits about Derek:
Ballas and dancer-choreographer Derek Hough kicked off their dancing shoes for a musical performance. The Ballas Hough Band performed pop-rock tunes, and the final number drew the most roars.
Hough danced through the audience and found four lucky young ladies and one lucky older security man, whom he twirled, swung and dipped, while Ballas led the band in a retro cover medley.
