    • Dance: TangoScore: 9-8-8=25 | Rank: 1st Place Status: SAFE
    • Judges’ Comments:
    • Carrie Anne – “You rocked my world. You guys saw this…Did she rock your world or not? That’s the way to do it.”
    • Julianne – “You have this little fiery, feisty rock star in there….It was so fun…Overall, loved it.”
    • Bruno – “Absolutely surprising. Don’t throw away your frame when you’re going for your lunges. You’ve got to retain it.”
    • Week’s Trivia:
    • Derek and Bindi earned the first “9” of the season — and the highest score of the night. 🙂
    • On All-Access, Derek revealed that the music for their Tango did not clear until Thursday. Wow! Bindi must be a really fast learner.
    • Due to the heavy metal nature of the music, this week’s Tango was highly atypical. Well executed and entertaining, but not passionate and intimate as Tangos typically are. See The Intimacy of the Tango below.
    • This Tango was also Derek’s lowest Tango score EVER.
    • Derek and Bindi’s Jive from last week earned the status of being the second most viewed video on YouTube in the history of the show. Last count was about 2.5 million views in only one week.
    • Music“You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC
    • Derek’s Week 2 Average on DWTS: 24.14
    • Derek’s Overall Tango Average: 27.32

WEEK 2Night 2 –  Hometown Glory – The Pros (September 22, 2015)

Derek Hough and Bindi Irwin

    • Dance: Waltz | Score: 7-8-8=23| Rank: 3rd Place tie Status: SAFE
    • Judges’ Comments:
Carrie Ann – “It was absolutely stunning, and the connection…was so incredible.”
Julianne – “What I just saw was two dancers dancing as one. It was so beautiful…Well done.”
Bruno – “That was so moving, wasn’t it?…She’s always on the moment. Right there, right there with your partner. So good to see…Simply beautiful.”
    • Week’s Trivia:
    • Derek spoke of being bullied when young, and of leaving that “little boy” behind in Utah when he left for England. Their waltz was about trying to find this little boy again. (More about this part of his life is addressed in his book Taking the Lead: Lessons from a Life in Motion.)
    • This week’s Waltz was beautiful, but the lift police got them, and the score does not reflect its beauty.
    • Carrie Ann said, “There was something magical happening… until you lifted your feet off the floor and did a lift….It was so special, but lift police in the house.”
    • Carrie Ann said in her blog, “I think there is some confusion on what a lift is: according to the National Dance Council of America Rule Book, “A lift is any movement during which one of the dancers has both feet off the floor at the same time with the assistance or support of their partner.”… Just to clarify, I do not get any joy in docking a point for breaking a rule.”
    • The score of 23 is the lowest Waltz score Derek has ever received. Prior to this night, it was 25.
    • Music: “Only A Man” by Johnny Lang
    • Derek’s Week 2 Average on DWTS after Night 2: 24.07
    • Derek’s Overall Waltz Average: 26.68
    • Season’s Points: 72/90 – Season Average: 24.00
    • Judges: Carrie Ann Inaba, Julianne Hough, Bruno Tonioli

WEEK 3 – TV Icons Week – (September 28 , 2015)

The dance

    • Dance: Quickstep Score: 8-8-8-8=32 (24 normalized)| Rank: 3rd Place Status: SAFE
    • Judges’ Comments:
    • Carrie Anne – “Just a few tiny mistakes, but you’re a solid competitor and I love watching you. “
    • Julianne – “You’re always a joy to watch, unfortunately, this was not your best dance.” [Huh????]
    • Bruno – “Bursting with energy which I like. I love your energy, but learn to control it.”
    • Guest Judge: “Alfonso Ribeiro: Bindi I love you. Everyone in the ballroom loves you. Just make sure you keep that posture.”
    • Week’s Trivia:
    • Derek appeared in an all male bumper with Ms. Piggy  who seemed to kind of like Derek. (Well, I mean, who doesn’t, really?) Watch the dance here and watch Derek and Ms Piggy here.
    • Derek and Bindi’s week, oh my!  Their scheduled music to The Jetsons did not clear in time; their dance was changed from Foxtrot to Quickstep, leaving them only two days to learn a new routine; Bindi hurt her foot! Despite all this, they danced  one of their best routines, never mind the judges’ nitpicking.
    • The Jeffersons was one of the longest running sitcoms on TV, lasting from 1975 to July of 1985, but Derek was born in May of 1985 and Bindi in 1998, so understandably neither of them had seen it before. 🙂
    • As part of the routine, at the end, Derek and Bindi both slid on the floor, causing Tom to quip, “A Quickstep, and we got the floor waxed.” 🙂
    • After the judges’ critiques and scores, Derek addressed the TV viewing audience, stating that when Bindi first started this season, she had never worn heels, had never danced before, and yet how incredible and miraculous it was that she learned their dance in only two days. He bowed to her several times, stating that he is in absolute awe of her.
    • Erin Andrews said, “You are the crowd favorite.”
    • Here’s a really cute interview of Derek and Bindi. Click here.
    • Music: “The Jeffersons” Theme Song
    • Derek’s Week 3 Average on DWTS: 25.56

Derek and Bindi

    • Dance: Contemporary | Score: 9-9-10=28| Rank: 1st  Status: SAFE

    • Julianne – “That took my breath away…That dance was breathtaking!”
    • Bruno – “He [Bindi’s dad] was dancing with you every step of the way…he really was.”
    • Week’s Trivia:
    • Was there a dry eye or an untouched heart after Derek and Bindi’s contemporary dance routine? Hardly!
    • “This is for my dad and everyone back home,” exclaimed a visibly moved Bindi.
    • Her dad, of course, was Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, who was bite by a stingray in 2006 and died instantly.
    • Derek had warned in his blog that they had shed a lot of tears this past week, with Bindi saying the likes of, “For the rest of my life, I’ll kinda feel like he’s gonna come home.” Even the producers and cameramen couldn’t hold it together.
    • Derek told Glamour Magazine, “I honestly haven’t been this emotional or cried so much since I was a little kid. I was like, ‘I think I’m on my menstrual cycle right now…or man-strual cycle, whatever you want to call it’.”
    • Derek told People Magazine that during the pre-recorded package that we all saw, he held Bindi’s ears to block it out so that she could be totally focused on her upcoming dance. Derek, you’re such a good partner!
    • Derek and Bindi earned the highest score of the night — and the first “10” of the season. Bindi was so moved that she ran over and individually hugged each of the judges. Awwww!
    • Derek said of Bindi, “I was so proud of this girl. She’s one of the most extraordinary young ladies I’ve ever met in my entire life. And it’s made this season one of my favorite season’s to date. She’s a bright light. She’s so special.”
    • Bindi told People Magazine, “Tonight, it was just all about remembering the fact that dad is always with me, and I carry him in my heart.”

    • Carrie Anne – “I haven’t done this in a long time…” (She gave a standing ovation.)
    • Week’s Trivia:
    • Derek’s said of his approach with Alexa going into the week: “Alexa’s confidence got a little knocked last week, I want to come in here and build it back up.”
    • He prepped her by teaching her to speak affirmations, such as “I got this. I got this.”
    • Derek and Alexa’s score was the first perfect score of the season.
    • Alexa’s previous scores were in the low 20’s, with one other score of 36/40.
    • Derek helped raise Mark and Alexa’s overall season placement to third place (24.3), tied with Carlos and Witney.
    • Mark posted this on Twitter: “SO PROUD RIGHT NOW!!! @alexavega Thank you @derekhough love you brother!!

    • Guest Judge (Maksim) –  “I loved it (4x)…. I feel like it was the dance of the night for sure….I smiled the entire time.” (Bindi danced fifth.)
    • Week’s Trivia:
    • Bindi received the first 10 of the night, and her second 10 of the season.
    • With Bindi’s score for the night, her two-week total is 65 points, which makes Derek and Bindi’s scores going into next week the highest of all the couples.
    • Derek and Bindi also have the highest average for the season, 25.29, ahead of Sharna and Nick by .29.
    • Derek and Bindi’s Contemporary routine has had over 8 million views on Facebook and 7 million on YouTube. Wow!

    • Bruno – “My little star has gone super nova tonight. It was blindingly brilliant. Execution and interpretation. What is astonishing is how you captured all the nuances of the dance. You didn’t copy it, but you made it your own, and you were as effective as the original.”
    • Guest Judge – “You both were amazing. Absolutely incredible.”
    • Week’s Trivia:
    • Bindi and Derek as a couple earned their first perfect score of the season.
    • Part of Derek’s nervousness before the lift was that his hands had to land in the “right” place when catching Bindi or she would be subject to her legs being too low.
    • Wasn’t it nice to have a dance that was 1:50 instead of 90 seconds? Derek and Bindi needed that time to do the dance justice. 🙂
    • Interesting fact: the rhinestones on Bindi’s dress acted as “traction” for Derek’s hands.
    • Derek is the only pro to have earned two perfect scores with two different partners in one season.
    • As of now, Bindi’s Cha Cha, Jive, Contemporary and Rumba have had the highest scores for those dances. Derek danced in all of them except the Cha Cha.
    • Bindi will be Team Captain next week for the team dances, because her season average is the highest.
    • Her team members will be Alexa & Mark, Carlos & Witney, and Alek & Lindsay.
    • And let’s leave this week with this thought form for the universe. 🙂

    • Bruno – “Apart from the fact that that was an Argentine Tango master class, it was spellbinding magic.”

    • Team Dance Trivia:
    • Team Name: Who You Gonna Call? 🙂
    • Bindi was Team Captain, which is the 9th time out of 14 team dances that Derek’s partner was captain.
    • This is the first time that his team has not won. But hey, Derek’s team has won the team dances 13 out of 14 times, including one tie! Pretty impressive record.
    • Derek’s a pretty intuitive guy; in his pre-show video diary, he stated that he had a feeling that the other team would win, because he had seen them perform. (He also liked their song better.)
    • Despite losing, his team’s score was still high. Derek’s lowest team score is a 25 (Season 16)! They still won!  Watch here.

    • Judges’ Comments:
    • Carrie Anne – “That was an incredible routine.”
    • Julianne – “When I watch you, I’m trying to find something wrong, because I can’t keep giving this girl 10’s all the time. …but the one thing that I found this time…[Your chin and frame.]The audience booed loudly, and so did I. 🙁
    • Bruno – “You have the Hollywood-sweetheart-feel that’s so infectious. What you do is beautiful, but I told you before about the shoulder.”
    • Week’s Trivia:
    • Judging from audience reaction (they were on their feet) Derek and Bindi’s Foxtrot was underscored.
    • Judge Julianne after “trying” to find something negative to say about Bindi, ends up saying, “…but you are in a class of your own.”
    • This is the fifth season since S-16 for the immunity “gimmick.” (There was none in S-18.) Derek won immunity in S-16 and S-17, and in S-20, Nastia won it with Sasha.
    • In S-19, Derek was in the dance-off with Bethany, and won an additional 3 points. (In S-16 and S-17, no extra points were awarded to the winners. In S-19, dance-off winners earned 3 points, this season only 2.)
    • This is Derek’s first loss for a dance-off, though he and Bindi won America’s Choice by 64%. Ah yeah! 🙂
    • Despite this “expected” underscoring for immunity week, Derek and Bindi still have the highest dance average for the season.
    • They have also had five out of eight of the highest scoring dances for a night.
    • Poor Bindi has been losing toenails since the beginning of the competition, and has bunions and blisters on her feet. Ouch!
    • And let’s give some love and prayers to Derek, who did not do the press line after the show due to illness.
    • Look carefully at this floor formation below. Derek at his choreographic finest. 🙂

    • Julianne – “That was a very traditional Viennese Waltz…(Thank you, Derek)…I can’t say enough. Gorgeous!”
    • Bruno – “This dance showed what an accomplished dancer you’ve become. It allowed you to connect emotionally with such clarity and honesty. It was a thing of pure beauty.”
    • Week’s Trivia:
    • Derek had choreographer’s block this past week and was stressed. It did not help that he had been ill all week with strep throat.
    • Derek was also stressed due to high expectations being placed on him and Bindi, his own expectations…and, because he didn’t want to let Bindi down as he felt he had Nastia last season.
    • Nastia immediately tweeted that he did not let her down. Awww!
    • Other than in the finals, this is only the second time that Derek has had two perfect scores in one night, this past week with Bindi and also in W-9 with Jennifer Grey.
    • Bindi now has 4 perfect scores for the season so far, and Derek has 5 (from dancing with Alexa).
    • Derek and Bindi’s perfect scores are both in ballroom and Latin.
    • This brings Derek’s total perfect scores in 16 seasons to 43, the highest of any pro.

    • Bruno –“It’s really wonderful watching you. The underarm turns were fantastic…It lacked a little side to side action.”
