A great, detailed blog from Amber via Parade Magazine! I’ve put a few excerpts below, but check out Parade to read the whole thing.
Still, though, his back got progressively worse every day and on Sunday night, he bent over and passed out, and woke up on the floor. When he woke up the next morning, he could barely walk. He still came in on Monday, but our production team said, “You need to go get an MRI. You have to check this out. We don’t want to risk you permanently injuring yourself here.” So he got the MRI and was told that one of the discs in his back is bulging, or something to that effect.
The day of, he was actually not going to dance; I did my whole dress rehearsal with Henry. But Derek wanted to be able to perform that day, and after they gave him medication, he did the performance. So it was a really stressful, eventful week! We’re taking today off for me to take care of my knees (I’m on the way to the doctor now!) and for Derek to take care of his back.
I really loved the music we danced to this week. One thing I love about Derek’s choreography is his musicality and how he really listens to all the intricate sounds and beats in the music. He choreographed the dance so that we moved to almost every beat and every accent in the music, which made the paso doble look even more crisp and clean. Every accent, stance, and mark was hit perfectly because of the way he choreographed it, so it was a really fun dance.
The dance-off challenge is also next week. If you get the highest score of the night, you don’t have to participate in the dance-off challenge. If you get the second-highest score, you get to choose who you want to challenge in a dance. Obviously, we’re going to try to get the best one of the night because I don’t want to be pitted against anybody! I don’t want to have to choose anyone, and I don’t want to be placed against any of my fellow cast mates. It’s still a competition so you have to be strategic and smart.
For our individual dance, we’ll be doing the rhumba. It’s going to be really interesting because you have to be so sexy and intimate…and Derek’s like my brother. So it should be an interesting week!
