Will DWTS Season 15 Be Derek Hough’s Last??

Most likely, according to him, via USA Today:

Derek Hough might be hanging up his Dancing With the Stars shoes.

The three-time DWTS champion, who is expected to be part of the line-up of Dancing With the Stars All-Stars, is considering making the season his last.

“This season is kind of my swan song,” Hough tells USA TODAY. “It’s my last hurrah.”

Hough spoke to USA TODAY for a story about dancers breaking into movie roles. He will star in the film Cobu out next year and is looking at other projects. He says this is a difficult task with the consuming DWTS workload.

“It’s really difficult to do both, impossible really,” Hough says. “This show is full time…there is zero flexibility. And I want to do other projects. I want to push myself into other areas.”

“And this is my 10th season, a great bench mark,” he adds. “You just kind of feel it. I need to take that chance. It’s important.”

Adam Shankman, a judge on So You Think You Can Dance who directed Hough’s sister Julianne Hough in Rock of Ages, believes Derek is due for movie stardom.

“I think he’s the next (break-out),” says Shankman. “He feels a moment away to me.”

Well, folks, this is what I’ve been saying all along. It is virtually impossible to do both, and with Cobu out next year it will be a good time to make that transition. And Adam Shankman, I adore you – this is the same thing I’ve been saying for a while too. Derek has STAR written all over him. :-)

Right on, Derek! It takes a lot of guts to let go of a paycheck to follow your dreams, especially in Hollywood. I’m so proud of him and although I will miss him on DWTS, I’d much rather watch him for 2 hours on the big screen. 2 hours of showcasing his talent rather than coaching a “star” to rebound in the crazy world of show biz. An hour of listening to him on iTunes works for me too. As a loyal fan, I could not be more excited about his decision. Rock on DH!

I am happy to hear that Derek is going in the right direction towards him fulfilling his destiny….. to show the world ALL his talents and be a hugely recognized talent in Hollywood!!! hehe! Derek has had an incredible, incredible record on DWTS …. but with the bullshit the show keeps putting the audience through with each new season, Derek is better using his time to do movies or creating these live shows with Julianne that they have talked about before. I would love to see him come back and do a results show pro dance every now and then (like Julianne), but not compete anymore. I am pretty tired from power voting, too. All the luck in the world to you, Derek! I know that you will do many great things in your future!

I’m sad at this news, but Derek’s brilliant talent is too great for DWTS, and I saw this day coming as probably many of us did. I thought he was the break-out star of the show from his very first appearance and he was the reason I watched the show, really. I feel so incredibly lucky to have been able to enjoy his exceptional performances season after season. What a great legacy. Derek is a “comes around once in a generation” kind of performer and star. I love that Adam Shankman “gets it”. A ‘moment away” from stardom, you bet!

It’s bittersweet because I adore him, but at the end of this season it really will be time for this super-talented 27-year-old to step out of his DWTS shoes. I, like everyone else who commented, want to see him soar outside the ballroom. Getting to see his artistry over these years has been a real privilege, and it will be even more of one to see him soar in other areas. You go, Derek! Climb those new mountains & know your fans will love whatever you do. And thank you for letting us know….

This makes me so sad. I hope it’s not true. He’s the best dancer ever. But, I understand he wants to do other things. I agree, this isn’t the last we’ll see of him.

And Heidi, you called it again. You are psychic I swear.

  6. RICK CRANDALL says:

TAKE IT FROM AN OLD MAN DEREK HOUGH WILL BE A SUPER STAR,HE IS THE NEXT BRAD PITT AND COMES TO THE TABLE WITH ALOT MORE TO OFFER.WATCH FOR MARIA,HER AND DEREK WILL BECOME A GREAT DANCE TEAM,and DON’T BE SHOCKED IF YOU SEE THEM BOTH IN A MOVIE TOGETHER,YES THE NEW FRED AND GINGER,HELL HE’S AS GOOD AS FRED ,KELLY IF NOT BETTER.MARIA WITH TRINING FROM MARKS MOM, SHE COULD BE GREAT ALSO.ANYONE FEEL THE SAME.

Well at least we get to have him on DWTS one more season and witness his pure genius in choreography. I wonder who he will be partnered with.

Aww, this makes me want to cry but of course I understand. I knew it was just a matter of time before he moved on but still I anticipated seeing him on DWTS each season. He is basically the reason why I love this show so much. I’m happy that he seems to have made a decision to branch out and try different things. He is so talented and has so much to offer the industry. I will be a fan no matter what direction or endeavors he chooses to take. Looking forward to Cobu as I can’t wait to see him on the big screen.

I’m so proud of you Derek and I wish you the absolute best. You deserve it… See you on the big screen!

I am so glad he will be in other movies but I will really miss him on dancing with the stars. He is my biggest crush ever and it would be sad not seeing him on all of the shows. But good for him for doing what he want. :)

  9. Safa says:

If the movie comes out when a season of DWTS is on telly, then I am positive he’ll be there to promote Cobu just like Julianne did with Footloose and Rock of Ages.. :D
I am hoping becomes this big superstar.. He deserves it.. He really got it. He’s amazing. He can pull anything off..
And I LOVE that Adam is on his side, that is great.. He knows a lot of people and he LOVES Derek.. Who wouldn’t, but yeah.. Things are looking up for Derek.. I cant wait. :D
It will be sad saying goodbye to him this season.. Now that they know it is his last season, I can imagine them like putting a video together of Dereks best moment on the show.. And the other dancers talking about how brilliant he is.. That sort of thing.. It would be amazing. :)

  10. Gitte says:

I’m glad that he’s on this season – it wouldn’t really be an Allstar-season without him. ;D
But I do agree that it will be a great way for him to finish the show too.
He’s already shown everyone what he can do in the ballroom and probably wants new challenges.
He’s got so many tallents and can move in so many directions after DWTS.
Personally I’d love to see him back on Broadway or in the West End but he’s also got promising career opportunities in film and music too.
I have a feeling we might see him back in the DWTS ballroom next year though – dancing with Boa or Allison(or both) to promote Cobu. ;)
