TV Guide Interview with Derek

Great interview with Derek by TV Guide - poor guy was worried about the Mambo move. I say, do what ya gotta do to stand out in a crowd!! ;-)   Here are some excerpts, click the link to read the whole thing:

TVGuide.com: We have to first talk about the mambo marathon and that head-bobbing move you guys did.
Derek Hough:
[Laughs] Everybody’s like, “What the heck is that? It’s so sexual!” Well, I didn’t mean for it to look that way! There’s a move in the mambo where she hinges back and you go down, flip your leg over and bring her back up. But as I was looking around, I was like, “Oh, we can’t just do our routine. We’ve got to do something different, something that kind of eggs the audience on a little bit.” So I did that move and just kind of kept her down there and she kept trying to come back up and I was like, “Nope!” It was pretty funny. She did an amazing job.

TVGuide.com: How much of those four minutes was improvised and how much was choreographed?
Hough:
I did a minute-long routine and then we just repeated it. When it was getting closer [to the end], we knew we really had to up our game, so I just started doing the most exciting parts. It was a total freestyle. She just starting grooving out and I was like, “OK, I’ll groove out with you.” So I grabbed her and started shouting out stuff: “OK, here comes the pretzel! Here comes the dip!” It was all out of order, but she was wanting it and just did a great job.

TVGuide.com: Do you feel like a lot of people have a different opinion of her now than they did when she was on Superstars?
Hough:
Yeah. When we’re in the studio, people go, “Give it up for Donny!” and the crowd goes crazy. “Give it up for Kelly!” and the crowd goes nuts. “Give it up for Joanna!” and everyone’s like, [muted] “Yay.” Her fan base is not as big as Donny Osmond’s or anyone like that and she knows that. But during the mambo marathon, when we were left dancing, the audience went insane — totally rooting for her. They were 100 percent on her side. She told me later, “Oh my gosh, I’ve never had so much support in my entire life.” It was so, so nice to hear that. She’s definitely earned her place on the show. I’m really proud of her.

TVGuide.com: You’re pulling double duty this week too: You and Mark [Ballas, with whom he formed the Ballas Hough Band] are performing a song, “Move,” on the results show. What can we expect?
Hough:
It’s going to be a duo thing. It’s going to be a full-on performance with dancers and stuff like that. We’ve been rehearsing and choreographing it. The performance is going to be available on iTunes. It’s going to be a little different from what people have heard from us before. It’s going to be more like something you would hear in a club, something that you would say, “Oh, I want to choreograph to that” when you hear it. We wanted to show a dance club vibe. It’s going to be a very three-dimensional show. We’re really excited.

I’m totally looking forward to seeing Derek & Mark perform. I think it will be fantastic. I’m also curious about the dancer that Derek said was in the MJ movie. I love the song and look forward to their performance. I have a feeling it will be a great one!

Good luck tonight Derek & Joanna! Kick butt Team DJ!

”. It’s going to be a full-on performance with dancers and stuff like that”

so is going to be a big production, i remember e few weeks ago Derek tweete somethig about him and MArk working with a choreographer (probably someone with more experience in this kind of dance),and today he said that one o f the dancer was on MJ movie.

    I’m curios now

I don’t think Derek’s worried about the mambo. The interviewer obviously thought it was very sexual and took that tone with Derek, but he didn’t really apologize for it. He knew exactly what he was doing and it worked. Derek seemed so proud of the dance in all of his interviews, calling it one of his best moments in 5 seasons. It got lots of attention, that’s for sure.

I’m admittedly not a big Donny fan, but he has been much easier to take than Marie. I just watched his latest interview with ET and he called Derek one of the best dancers in the world. I thought it was such a nice compliment. He mentions Derek several times throughout the interview, and you can tell Donny respects him and his talent a lot. It was nice to see. He also said they’ll be shirtless in Team Tango!!!

    • I read the write-up for the interview you’re talking about – was he serious about being shirtless?? From reading what was said, I thought he wasn’t, but I haven’t watched the video yet. Yeah, Donny is way easier to take than Marie was. Although that bar was set pretty low. ;-) I was afraid Donny was going to be intolerable, but that hasn’t been the case, most of the time. Speaking of ET – how much of that show do the Osmonds own? They only seriously cover Donny and they give him a LOT of press.

I think Derek has shown concern in the past about stuff like the Mambo – he seemed somewhat concerned with the Lambada, and I think there was a little concern over how the Mambo was perceived. But I don’t think it’s keeping him up at night, and at the same time, he seems to recognize that ya gotta do what ya gotta do. And he certainly had a blast with the Mambo – he said as much.

I agree about Donny being Easier to take then Marie!! he started off kind of up there with Marie but def has toned it down!! i have not seen the interview on ET but i don’t watch ET’s coverage of DWTS cuz well Marie annoys me and its all about them and not really the other dancers!!!
